Oregonian Endorses Kurt Schrader for Congress

From the Oregonian:

Voters in Oregon's 5th Congressional District have an easy choice to make in the November election: They should elect Kurt Schrader, the veterinarian and respected state senator from Canby, to replace retiring six-term Congresswoman Darlene Hooley.

There's one problem, though. In a hotly contested race, voters might elect his big-spending opponent instead, and that would be a serious mistake.

That opponent, Lake Oswego businessman Mike Erickson, is poorly prepared to serve in Congress. Unlike Schrader, he has no experience in public office, shows a weak grasp of the issues and comes with a boatload of troubling questions about his integrity.

Unfortunately, Erickson, a Republican, is using his personal fortune to flood the airwaves with a barrage of misleading TV attack ads portraying Schrader as a tax-and-spend liberal. In truth, Schrader is a conservative Democrat who built a reputation during his decade in the Legislature as a hard-nosed numbers cruncher and advocate for performance-based budgeting.

Congress could use more members like Schrader, who is also opposed by Libertarian Steve Milligan of Monmouth and Constitution Party member Douglas Patterson of Oregon City. The far-flung 5th District stretches from the mid-Willamette Valley to the Oregon coast.
