Join the fight to stop special-interest dominance of our elections
I'll stand with Kurt Schrader in the fight to stop special-interest money in campaigns.
Do you think there’s too much out-of-state special interest money in our elections? I do.
And a recent Supreme Court decision has made things much worse.
In Citizens United v. FEC, the Court ruled that the First Amendment gives special interests unlimited ability to influence our elections. In other words, allowing big out-of-state corporations, special interests and unions to spend millions of dollars, often anonymously, for or against different candidates or interests and drowning out the voices of regular Americans.
Special interests should not have the ability to use millions to influence our elections. It’s a matter of fairness. They don’t want a level playing field and they will spend millions to keep it that way.
While there are some small changes Congress can make around the edges, the major problem is the Supreme Court’s 1974 flawed decision in Buckley v. Valeo that money equals free speech.
That’s why I have introduced an Amendment to the U.S. Constitution giving individual states and Congress the authority to limit the influence of special interests in our elections. (Read the text here.)
I introduced this same amendment last year but –predictably –it went nowhere back in D.C. Unfortunately, without pressure from their constituents, many members of Congress were unwilling to challenge these out-of-state interests who bankroll so many of their elections.
Here’s where you come in. By signing this petition, you will help build the movement and put pressure on Congress to put fairness back in our elections.
Out-of-state special interests, corporations and unions are spending millions to influence judicial elections, congressional elections and even ballot measures.
The Supreme Court’s decision opens the door for this to become the norm in American politics and we cannot let that happen. We must not allow this decision to turn our elected officials into nothing more than puppets of their special interest sponsors. We must fight to make sure the people’s voice is the loudest voice we hear.
Please join this important cause.
