As a longtime veterinarian, Kurt Schrader knows how to keep
our friends in the animal kingdom happy and healthy. But as
a State Senator, Kurt has done even more to improve the
health care of Oregon’s humans:
-
Improving Insurance Coverage: Kurt helped pass
legislation that requires insurance companies to cover vital
preventative services including: mammography, cervical cancer
screening, clinical breast exams and prostate exams.
-
Protecting Services for Seniors: As the Co-Chair of the legislature’s
budget-writing Joint Ways and Means Committee, Kurt managed through
tough financial times to protect services for seniors. That includes establishing a permanent, stable funding source for
Oregon Project Independence, which provides home care assistance that allows seniors to stay living independently in
their homes instead of being forced into expensive nursing homes. This not only helps seniors, but saves tax dollars as
well. Kurt also protected senior’s access to long term care.
-
Preserving the Oregon Health Plan: Kurt continued funding for all currently
eligible children, seniors, and individuals with disabilities.
-
Lowering the cost of Prescription Drugs: Just as he promised, Kurt created
the bulk purchasing program that allows low income seniors to pay less for their prescription
medicines. And Kurt co-sponsored the bill to expand the program to all Oregonians
without prescription drug coverage.
